Some forms of street photography suit small towns
Can I even do street photography in a small town?, was a question I asked, when I was first thinking about street photography.
I live in a small market town in Somerset, so, great ‘street photography’ opportunities are small. But it was something I wanted to try if it was possible.
The good news, is that street photography in a small town, is definitely possible! But, maybe your expectations might have to change a little.
I’ve spent a lot of time going through photo books. I admire the work of great street photographers, like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Joel Meyerowitz, etc.
But their work took place in large cities. Each one coming into contact with hundreds, if not thousands of people every day. This gave them many opportunities for a remarkable image.
Clearly, there’s not going to be as many opportunities in a small town.
Photography in a small town isn’t the same. You don’t have the usual hustle and bustle of a city.
You don’t have the skyscrapers, bridges and underground stations that you have in metropolitan areas. You might have a few shops, a park, or green area and that’s about it.
So, what can you do?
I can’t speak for everyone, so I’ll speak for my situation.
Local architecture becomes the background for many of my images. I’m lucky enough to live in a town mentioned in the Doomsday book. So, there are several historical buildings in the town.
My photography generally becomes urban photography, that includes people. Rather than street photography that includes buildings.
It is definitely different, but it can be just as enjoyable. Also, if you’re anything like me and feel a bit anxious making images of strangers, there’s a lot less stress!

There are a lot of options in street photography, including in your small town, or even a village. You just have to try different things things, until you find the right fit for you.
